Retail Trade in border regions

With regard to the development of town centres (e.g. economic stabilisation) and retail trade (including leisure-oriented and tourism relevant retail trade) there are manifold opportunities but also problems such as the development of large-area retail trade on the outskirts of towns in the border region and lacking regional co-ordination of the location development in the border region. The DSSW’s surveys and pilot projects which have been carried out in the regions bordering Poland and the Czech Republic showed that it is necessary to examine and control the settlement of large-area retail trade facilities in these regions from a cross-border perspective. National instruments of control do exist on both sides of the border. The survey of cross-border effects and a cross-border co-operation in this field, however, has yet to be developed.
The DSSW’s objectives of this project are: to carry out a survey of the status quo of plannings in the field of large-area retail trade in the border regions Germany-Poland, and Germany-Czech Republic on the one hand, and a survey of cross-border effects as well as the initiation of a cross-border exchange of experience on the subject of trade, on the other hand. Other objectives are also to establish a network for the co-ordination of data etc., and a presentation of the instruments of control.
